JOHNSTON, IOWA -- Twenty-four men and women were sworn in as peace officers with the Iowa Department of Public Safety at the 35th Academy Graduation ceremony on Friday.

The graduating officers spent 22 weeks at a training academy designed to prepare them for readiness to serve as law enforcement officers. They went through the use of firearms, emergency response procedures, first aid and CPR, tactical driving techniques and courses on Iowa law.

In a written statement, Governor Branstad congratulated the new officers and thanked them for serving the people of Iowa.  “Law enforcement is a dangerous profession, and your training has prepared you to make solid decisions in difficult situations.  I commend you for your professionalism and commitment to protect public safety in Iowa,” Branstad wrote.

Iowa Department of Public Safety Commissioner Larry L. Noble spoke at the swearing in ceremony, along with key note speaker Gene Shepard, former DPS Commissioner and U.S. Attorney.

The graduates will serve their communities as Troopers with the Iowa State Patrol and Special Agents with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
