OTTUMWA, IA -- Ottumwans got an update Tuesday on the security cameras that will soon be all over downtown.

Business owners who approved the cameras met with Officer Mickey Hucks, who was replacing Police Chief Jim Clark due to illness. The money for the new cameras comes from a technology grant of $300,000.

Hucks told them where the primary locations for the cameras will be. All of the streets in downtown will be covered; including Main, Market, Jefferson, Church, and all of the numbered streets.

Officer Hucks also said the High Definition cameras will be moveable and can zoom in to see objects from far distances.

"That's why you get high definition cameras. Their capability of zooming in is a lot better. We might not be able to get a license plate that's too far out, but we're hoping that's going to other cameras and good old fashion patrol. There's a lot of different things we're hoping to get out of this."

The department has to finalize a few more details. The cameras are expected to be up and running sometime in July.
