OTTUMWA, IOWA -- The United Way of Wapello County is encouraging volunteers to come out during National Volunteer Week.  The nationwide program is focused on getting more people involved in their communities.

At the United Way branch in Ottumwa, KTVO spoke with Executive Director Desiree Johnson about what volunteering means to the community.

“By volunteering you could learn a lot about the community and when you are involved in the community it becomes a better place,” said Johnson.

Volunteer Week here in Ottumwa kicks off with “Community Day.”  The event takes place this weekend at Quincy Place Mall.  During the event, there will be a blood drive, games and door prizes.  People from the community will also be encouraged to sign up with an organization and volunteer their time with that organization in the future.

“One of the volunteer opportunities this weekend is actually a walk for life.  The event is sponsored by the Heartland Pregnancy Center and they are going to kick of the celebration this weekend at 9:30 a.m.  If you would like more information on how to do that I am sure they would be happy with the help,” said Johnson.

Johnson also gave KTVO great information on how to get involved with an organization.

“I encourage people of our community not to forget about volunteerism outside of National Volunteer Week.  There are so many opportunities all throughout the year.  Really search out the organization to find out how you can get involved in the community,” said Johnson.
