KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Dozens of families enjoyed a day of fishing Saturday afternoon at Spur Pond in Kirksville.
It was part of the first annual family fishing day extravaganza. The two hour event was sponsored by the Kirksville Parks and Recreation Department, the Truman State University Exercise Science Department and the Missouri Department of Conservation.
Kids of all ages along with their families were encouraged to come out for the day to enjoy fishing and other outdoor activities.
"I was going fishing but really didn't catch anything so I went on a scavenger hunt and I found the word we were supposed to and I got a couple of prizes," said Emily Middleton.
Poles and bait were provided for free and no fishing permits were required.
Izaiha McFarland, 9, was Saturday's big winner by having the biggest catch, a 14 inch trout.
"I have been fishing since I was younger and I go fishing all the time," McFarland said.
Organizers say if you missed Saturday's event not to worry because they have other activities planned for the year.
"We do have several other activities coming up really soon," said Recreation Specialist Robin Harden. "We have the Hershey Track and Field Games, the Aquafina Pitch, Hit and Run and we also have the Easter egg hunt those are our next few events on tap."
About 125 people attended the two hour event. Click here if you would like more information on upcoming events.
