KIRKSVILLE, MISSOURI -- The Adair County SB40 Developmental Disability Board announces the recent award of two grants to People First of Kirksville, a self-advocacy organization for persons with developmental disabilities. The first of the grants enabled People First and Chariton Valley Association to organize and provide transportation for a group of Adair County self-advocates attending the 10th Annual Disability Rights Legislative Day on March 9 in Jefferson City, where they joined hundreds of disability advocates from across the State in making their voices heard by legislators. Zach Wyatt, Second District State Representative, spoke to the group and met with individuals during the day.
The second grant awarded to People First was utilized to fund the “Celebrate the Artist in You” art show for persons with developmental disabilities, held on April 5 at the Kirksville Regional Office. The purpose of the annual event is to showcase the creativity and ability of participant artists who are too often seen only in terms of their disabilities instead of their abilities.
Both of the funded projects served to promote self-advocacy, self-determination and community integration for persons with developmental disabilities, all of which are primary goals of the Adair County SB40 DD Board. Checks for the two projects were presented on April 7 to Chuck Comstock, People First advisor, and Lennie Henson, People First self-advocate, by Deb Wohlers, Executive Director of the ACSDDB.
