KIRKSVILLE, MO --
Area residents took time out of their days Tuesday to help save lives.

The Kirksville Kiwanis Club held its annual Red Cross Blood Drive at the NEMO Fairgrounds.

Coordinators say they had a good showing of people right off the bat. The American Red Cross encourages you to give blood if you can, and that just one unit can do a lot of good.

“Depending on the type of trauma in hospitals, a person that's in the emergency room or ER surgery can go through as many as four to 15 individual units of blood, so just one donation really does make a difference,” said Ted Zeiter, Team Supervisor with the American Red Cross.

As far as the blood supply goes, Zeiter says they can never have too much.

It takes about 30 minutes to give blood. The Red Cross was hoping to collect 75 units of blood at the Kiwanis drive.

If you're interested in donating, call 1-800-RED CROSS or log onto www.redcrossblood.org to schedule an appointment.
