KIRKSVILLE -- Every year the American Red Cross honors individuals who have excelled in their service to the community.
Friday’s annual banquet brought together community volunteers who work with the Red Cross.
In 2010 the North Central Missouri Chapter of the American Red Cross helped 44 families who had to deal with disasters like floods or house fires.
Proceeds from tonight's banquet and silent auction will go to the Red Cross to help with future community projects.
"We don't do it by ourselves. The Red Cross is a volunteer organization and we rely on volunteers. We rely on volunteers to help us do our jobs, we rely on volunteers to help us with the funds we need so we can do our job and we just feel it's only right to honor them," said Deane Valkenaar, executive director of the North Central Missouri Chapter.
Among those receiving awards tonight were Adair County Sheriff Bob Hardwick, deceased Truman professor Jack Bowen, and Novinger resident Edward Gurgich, as well as fallen military heroes Brandon Maggart and Adam Smith. Click here to find out how to volunteer with the American Red Cross.
