Friday, March 25th, at 5 p.m. is the deadline to file for the election in Lancaster.
LANCASTER, MISSOURI -- A write-in campaign...that is what two Heartland residents are organizing in Lancaster for the upcoming April 5th election.
Donna Welte and James Hindman have already filed as write-in candidates for the office of Mayor.
Former Lancaster Mayor John Tippett resigned due to health reasons, but had already filed for re-election...and due to state law, his name cannot be removed from the ballot.
Schuyler County Clerk Bree Shaw discussed the complicated process if Tippett wins the election.
"If he does win the position, John Tippett, then he will just have to decline the position. Then the Aldermen of the City of Lancaster will appoint somebody and that will be for a one-year term. And at the next general municipal election in April of next year, they will have somebody that will be back on the ballot," Clerk Shaw said.
She also had this advice for those voting for a write-in candidate:
"A lot of times people don't spell the name correctly, but whatever the intent of the voter is, we go by that...The common mistake is people forget to fill in the oval next to the name, and it plainly states in the instructions, you have to fill in the circle and write the candidates name or it cannot be counted," Clerk Shaw added.
The deadline to file as a write-in candidate for the election is Friday, March 25th at 5 p.m.
