DOUDS, IOWA -- Children in Van Buren County learned about a new culture in a unique way.
First graders at Douds Elementary School got to play with several African drums. They were taught several beats and rhythms by instructor Fonziba Koster.
Koster lived in Africa for several months, learning about African culture and even made a documentary that she showed the students.
She goes to schools all over Van Buren County to pass her knowledge down to children. Koster says drums are great in more ways than one.
"It's great for kids who might not excel in other areas like sports or music. It's great team building and good focus as well as recall. Drumming has shown to have a lot of benefits for helping with the coherent brain waves. It improves the immune system. So its just a great, fun activity for kids to do together."
Koster also hosted a question and answer segment with the kids later in the afternoon.
