BURLINGTON, IOWA -- Some government workers are overpaid as it turns out, but the won't keep the money.
Salaried county employees of Des Moines County will have to return all the extra money they were paid last fiscal year and the first part of the current one.
The county supervisors decided at their meeting Tuesday to seek repayment of about $24,000 total via paycheck deductions.
The Hawk Eye says former county workers owe about $1,060 of the total, and they'll be billed for their share.
Officials blame the overpayments on an accounting error. Employees who filled out timecards are not affected.
The county auditor's office found the problem in October. It covered all of fiscal 2009-10 and the first quarter of 2010-2011.
Supervisors initially decided to seek repayment only of this fiscal year's overpayments, but then decided Tuesday to seek the rest from the previous fiscal year.
