KIRKSVILLE, MO --
The Kirksville Historic Preservation Commission is making headway on officially naming historic sites.
The KHPC voted yes to designating five properties as city historic landmarks. Those include Forest-Llewellyn Cemetery, the Grim Building, the Spencer/Selby House, the W.G. Fout House, and Pickler's Famous.
The next step in the historic designation will be a public hearing before the Planning and Zoning Commission, followed by a public meeting and vote by the city council.
“This is the biggest thing for historic preservation in the city for many many years. We're finally getting around to officially designating what's historic in the city and we've got this official zoning designation and these property owners have come forward voluntarily, and that's what we think is great about the whole program,” said Brad Selby, Kirksville Codes and Planning Director.
Members of KHPC met with the county commissioners last week and hope to get the Adair County Courthouse on the list.
Another historic survey will be completed next month.
Selby says that survey will reveal more information on historic buildings, which will hopefully get more applications in for official designation.
