KIRKSVILLE, MO -- With spring just around the corner farmers are running out of time to ensure assistance on their yield in case of a severe weather event. The Adair County USDA Farm Service Agency is reminding producers that March 15, is the deadline to sign up for Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) and also private crop insurance.
“Private crop insurance covers basically all of the spring planting crops we have in the county” said Adair County USDA Farm Service Agency Executive Director Philip Ayers. “They pick up more crops every year and so your corns, your soybean, all of those are covered under private insurance; you have to go to your own private insurance plan and buy that.”
Getting the insurance on your crops will help you to kill two birds with one stone.
“The reason you do consider NAP and crop insurance too, is to be eligible for some of our disaster plans” Ayers said. “If you are not insured and there’s a severe weather event like a drought or a flood that affects your yield, we can’t help you. For everyone else who is insured, they would be able to apply for disaster assistance through the Farm Service Agency.”
Ayers said there are many different plans out there too. You can insure 50/50, five percent or clear up to 85 percent. Regardless of what your insurance plan is, if you’re insured then you are eligible for disaster assistance.
Spring-seeded crops for grazing need to have NAP or crop insurance coverage to maintain eligibility for Livestock Forage Disaster Program. To qualify for the Supplemental Revenue Assistance Program, Tree Assistance Program and Emergency Livestock Assistance Program, producers must meet the risk management purchase requirement by either obtaining a policy or plan of insurance, under the Federal Crop Insurance Act or NAP coverage.
