BONAPARTE, IOWA -- For one man in southeast Iowa he made quite the find.
Nathan Batten has been raising chickens for about a year. On February 18 he was at a loss for words at what his one-year-old Australorp hen named Aussie had produced.
“I seen the egg in the nest box and I couldn’t believe it,” said Batten. “I was trembling. I took it. I carried it in my coat pocket downtown and showed everybody.”
The egg’s measurements are 4.1 ounces 3.5 inches and 6.5 inches in diameter. Aussie weighs only 96 ounces or six pounds. It actually took the bird a week before she would lay another egg.
Numerous media outlets have reached out to Batten which has made things difficult for him during the day.
“I’ve been on the phone non-stop. I haven’t been able to get anything done.”
Batten actually Googled himself and has found numerous articles and story about his chicken’s egg. Batten has looked into contacting the Guinness Book of World Records to see if his chicken egg is the world’s largest of its kind. Currently on the website there is no mention of the world’s largest chicken egg.
So what does Batten think the headline should be on this story?
“I’ve been calling it eggnormous, eggstremely eggnormous.”
