OTTUMWA -- With about a month and a half before the deadline, taxes are being filed everywhere you look.

This year the IRS wants to make sure taxpayers look at additional deductions and credits they might be qualified for.

“One of the biggest credits we want to remind taxpayers about is the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC),” said Christopher Miller IRS spokesperson.  “EITC is a huge credit for Iowa families and can mean a real difference to families trying to make ends meet.”

A married household making a little more than $48,000 with three or more children could qualify for a credit of up to $5,600.  Ottumwa residents took advantage of the tax credit during last year’s filing season.

“Last year in Ottumwa alone this credit meant nearly six-million dollars to nearly three-thousand families here with an average credit of around $2,000 so that could make a real difference to a family.”
