KIRKSVILLE -- Filing your tax returns can be a daunting task this time of year, but a Truman State organization can help you through the process.
Today on the Truman Campus Beta Alpha Psi, a college accounting organization volunteered to help people file their tax returns.
It's part of the volunteer income tax assistance program, or vita.
The Truman Students who help with the program are IRS certified to help file simple returns for low to moderate income levels.
They can't do complicated returns for farmers and certain small businesses but normal tax returns shouldn't be a problem.
Best of all, it's free. That means you don't have to pay someone to do it, but you still get a quality return.
"It is free here, but we also recommend sort of a satisfaction and a guarantee that it's done right. We believe that we actually are giving them great quality. We do good quality control, and if they have any questions we're there to answer them for them so they're not worried about whether they did the return correctly."
If you missed Saturday’s event, you can still get some help with your return on March 26, when Truman will host another tax return event.
If you go, you’ll need to bring the following items:
- Social Security Cards for you, your spouse and dependent's and/or a Social Security Number verification letter issued by the Social Security Administration.
- Wage and earning statement(s) Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R form and interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099)
- A copy of last year's Federal and State returns if available
- Bank Routing Numbers and Account Numbers for Direct Deposit
- Total paid for day care provider and the day care provider's tax identifying number (SSN or the Business Employer Identification Number.)
