OTTUMWA,IOWA -- The melting snow from the recent blizzard is causing another problem.

Ice jams in Van Buren County Thursday evening and in Ottumwa early Friday morning resulted in several feet of flooding.

The Van Buren incident occurred on the Fox River south of Mount Sterling. There were reports of six feet of water. The Ottumwa flooding was minor and quickly receded. It happened on 155th Street along the Des Moines River.

Warmer temperatures are melting the snow quickly, causing rivers to rise. But Wapello County Engineer Brian Moore is not concerned.

"Looking at the latest river levels, the river is not expected to peak above flood stage. So at this point we're not taking any special precautions."

Moore believes the worst is over since almost all of the snow is gone. But in case of emergency, the city will update citizens.

"The city and county will put up public notices warning residents there's a possiblity. Just keep an eye on the river and be prepared to move themselves and any property they can to higher ground if needed."
