Adair County pay controversy

ADAIR COUNTY, MO. -- Some Adair County sheriff's deputies are up in arms about those who work at the Adair County courthouse. County courthouse employee's received three paid days off, while others had to work tirelessly during the blizzard of 2011.

We received an anonymous e-mail from a county sheriff's deputy complaining that county courthouse employees were given three paid days off, while sheriff's department workers were working in life threatening conditions.

While talking with the deputy on the phone Monday, it appears all that they are asking for is to be rewarded for their work by getting those three paid days off like everyone else.

KTVO paid a visit to Adair County commissioner Stan Pickens about the situation.

“That’s where we have a problem. We in Adair county have three groups; people in the courthouse, road and bridge and the sheriff department. The road and bridge crew worked over forty hours. They got their comp time. They didn't ask any more than what they worked in overtime. The same thing applies to the sheriff department”, said Pickens.

If you feel like you have been wronged during this process visit the county clerk at the courthouse in Adair County.

Below is the email we received from a concerned deputy:

Dear Newcasters,

I would like to bring to your attention that the County Commissioner has decided to pay the court house County Employees for their 3 days off because of the blizzard.....but at the same time Stan Pickens decided that the Sheriff's Deputies and Jailers would not be compensated as well for showing up and working under some of the worst weather we have seen in a very long time.

While we dug our patrol trucks out and shoveled the snow from the street to get to work, Stan Pickens and the court house employee's were all warm and cozy in their homes enjoying three days off.

We on the other hand were walking in 3 foot drifts getting people out of their vehicles and saving lives.

All we asked was to be compensated for the same days off IF you worked them so we could enjoy the fruits of our labor....but no. Stan Pickens decided to not only not pay us comp time so we could enjoy a few days off, he didn't even tell us! We received our paychecks to find no comp time!

What a slap in the face! Thanks Stan Pickens for your support. We are county employees and expect to be compensated just like you and the courthouse. It isn't fair or morally acceptable that you get paid time off for snow days, while we work in below 0 weather and receive nothing!

I would like KTVO to ask the County Commission to explain themselves.

We should be able to enjoy 3 days off for our above and beyond duty to the citizens of Adair County!
