KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- With the temperature starting to warm up, a lot of people think flu season is over but ,that's not the case. In fact, it's still in full swing and its not too late to get vaccinated and protect yourself.
I spoke with Lori Guffey, a registered nurse at the Adair County Health Department about Flu season and what you need to know.
Ela: When should people start thinking about getting vaccinated?
Lori: Usually we start giving out flu shots in early September and the season usually peaks at the end of February.
Ela: Who should get vaccinated?
Lori: Everyone is at risk for seasonal flu. But, generally people 65 and older and children younger than five should get vaccinated.
Ela: Who should not get a flu shot?
Lori: People who have severe allergy to chicken eggs and people who have a severe reaction to a flu vaccination in the past.
Ela: If people are afraid of needles, what are some other ways they can't prevent themselves from getting the flu?
Lori: Practice good hygiene, washing your hands, avoid crowded areas if you are feeling sick, and don't forget to cover your mouth when coughing.
Ela: Are there any side effects people have to worry about after getting a flu shot?
Lori: Usually no, your arm might feel a little sore where you got the shot or you might feel a little fatigued but other than that there is nothing to worry about.
Ela: How much does it cost to get a flu shot?
Lori: Its absolutely free and we encourage everyone to come down and get vaccinated.
