KIRKSVILLE, MISSOURI -- Truman State University students who are interested in finance and accounting are gaining experience by offering Volunteer Tax Assistance (VITA) to Kirksville residents.

Between eight a.m. – three p.m. Feb. 12, 19, 26, and March 26, you can stop by Violet Hall on the TSU campus and file your taxes for free.

Beta Alpha Psi, an honorary organization at TSU, will do the returns.

“[We’re] mainly geared [towards] accounting majors and finance majors,” said Jennifer Kalla, a senior at TSU, who is studying to be an accountant. “We do a lot of different things; we bring in speakers that we listen to [and] we do community service, but one of our main roles is VITA.”

If you have any doubts about students doing your return, don’t.

“The students go through a lot of training,” said Kalla. “They get IRS certification and when they are doing it, we have several people check the returns after them, including graduate students, just to make sure that we are doing their tax return right and we're giving them the best quality that we can.”

You need to take along a photo id; social security cards for yourself, your spouse, and any dependents you have; any income information you have (W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, and interest and dividend statements from banks); and last year’s tax return, if possible.

The best part is the price.

"Everything is totally free,” said Kalla. “We don't accept tips or anything like that. We just wanted to provide an alternative for the Kirksville community to come in and get their tax returns done for free, especially students who don't have another alternative to go to, and we just think more people will come out if it's free, as well."
