JEFFERSON CITY, MO. -- Gov. Jay Nixon is directing the Missouri Department of Transportation to assist with clearing snow from roadways in at least 44 Missouri counties that experienced record amounts of snow from the winter storm that hit Missouri. That order was released Friday.

“Many Missouri counties and cities need our help,” Gov. Nixon said, in taking this unprecedented action. “I have ordered MoDOT to continue working to clear snow in these 44 counties. We’ll do everything we can to return road conditions to normal, so vital health care, education and commerce can resume throughout Missouri.”

In preparation for the historic storm, Gov. Nixon on Monday declared a state of emergency for all of Missouri and activated some 600 members of the Missouri National Guard, so they could be positioned around the state to provide help where it was needed most. Many of the Guard members still deployed are being used to reach Missourians in medical emergencies because local responders cannot get through, or to help citizens travel to hospitals to receive dialysis and other life-saving treatments. The Governor said the help from MoDOT in clearing local roads would enable emergency responders and medical services to reach citizens.

A current map of counties certified by the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) as receiving record snowfall and where local jurisdictions would be eligible for MoDOT assistance, can be found with a click here.

The Governor’s directive, Executive Order 11-05, will remain in effect until further notice.
