ELDON, IOWA -- The Cardinal Community School District is fighting cancer in a different way. The Cardinal Archery "Shooting for a Cure" fundraiser was held Saturday where students shot arrows to help in the fight against cancer.
“They'll shoot five arrows and the very last arrow that they shoot, they will give to their survivors or in memory of somebody that passed away from cancer, and the kids will either keep that arrow or give it to a spouse or loved one that would like that arrow,” said an event organizer.
The participants wore pink shirts to promote cancer awareness. Some students had at least one family member who has dealt with some form of the disease.
Teams with the highest scores were rewarded with trophies for their participation and in the end, it was all worth it. To them, the event wasn't about winning, but about fighting for a worthy cause.
“Nobody should have to go through that kind of pain and suffering, that's why we're doing this, to help find a cure,” said one student.
Some of the donations depended on the number of points earned per arrow shot. After it was all said and done, the students raised over $1000 and all of the money will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
