OTTUMWA, IOWA -- The first legislative session of the new year will begin next week in Des Moines and it will look a little different.

The new look House will be under Republican control, while the Senate will still be controlled by Democrats. The split control will provide many disagreements and challenges. Representatives admit working to please everybody will be tough, but will work together.

Republicans have many changes they would like to make. One is to impeach the Supreme Court Justices who were in favor of gay marriage.

State Representative Mary Gaskill says that is unfair.

"I felt they were doing their job. If the voters of Iowa want to remove those additional Supreme Court Justices, they will need to wait until they are up for re-election."

Another hot topic that Republicans have on their agenda is promising spending cuts by eliminating programs. One of those is getting rid of free preschool for budgetary concerns.

Gaskill says that will have major consequences.

"I think the middle class and others should be able to have that preschool option, and not have to pay for it over and above what they pay for their taxes. All children should have that availability of preschool."

She has heard the same opinions from her constituents.

"I was knocking on doors and that was one thing very important to my constituents. I'm going to be asking for a public hearing on that. It is important not only to my district, but to all districts in the state of Iowa."

The session is expected to last until May.
