OTTUMWA, IOWA -- As of Thursday, alcoholic energy drinks with caffeine will become a thing of the past.

Iowa retailers have until Dec. 2 to remove any products like Four Loko and Joose from their shelves.

Selling such drinks after Dec. 2 will result in the suspension of the outlet's liquor license and civil penalty of up to $1,000 per violation.

The companies making such drinks have been ordered by the Food and Drug Administration to remove the stimulants from these products.

The products will not be on shelves again until they have reformulated.

The FDA beileves that the drinks with their high levels of caffeine and alcohol make abuse likely.

KTVO spoke to Bloomfield Dr. Andrew Porter las week and he agreed with the FDA assessment.

Porter says drinkers should avoid the drinks all together or drink them in very small amounts.

It may be tough for Southeast Iowa Drinkers who want one more taste of the current beverages. As early as last week, KTVO could not fina an Ottumwa store that was still stocking the drinks.
