OTTUMWA, IOWA -- It was a long awaited day for some lucky children in the Heartland.

Many kids were given a present that no gift from Santa could ever buy.

Today is National Adoption Day.

Many people were proud to call themselves parents, whereas others are just glad to have a home and family to call their own.

5 kids in Ottumwa were adopted today, including 6 month old Alexander Elsworth Fink.

Alexander was adopted today by his new parents, Robert and Amanda Fink.

The adoption may have been finalized today, but the Finks have considered Alexander a part of the family from day one.

Mrs. Fink had some encouraging words for others thinking of adopting a child.

"Don't give up," Fink said. "Even if it seems stressful, the big picture is big. Every tiny step you take gets you closer to finalizing the adoption."

Many children in the Heartland are still in need of a home.

Remember, you can adopt year-round.
