OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Many Iowa sheriffs said they will follow the requirements on an upcoming permit to carry weapons.
Sheriffs used to hand out permits at their own discretion.
But pretty soon, anybody 21 or older who has not been convicted of domestic abuse or is not legally drunk will be able to carry a concealed weapon.
Some residents are unsure and concerned of what changes are yet to come.
We spoke with Sheriff Don Kirkendall of the Wapello County Sheriff's Office and he said the law will be taken very seriously.
"The bottom line is whatever the law says we must do, we're going to do," Kirkendall said."
At this point, the Wapello Sheriff's Office has not received very many applications for new guns; however, that could change the closer we get to the new year.
