OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Press Release from Indian Hills Community College
Indian Hills Community College plans to honor veterans at the college and throughout the area during a special “Veterans Recognition Week” next week.
Area residents are invited to join IHCC faculty, staff and students as they honor past and present members of the armed services during the week of Nov. 8.
A “Wall of Honor” recognizing Indian Hills’ students and staff members who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces is currently displayed near the formal lounge area, outside the library, on the Ottumwa campus.
A yellow ribbon campaign will kick off the recognition week activities with students able to write a note to a service member serving overseas. The students will also be able to wear a yellow ribbon in support of the troops. Students and staff members are donating various items for care packages that will be mailed to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan later this month.
A special flag ceremony saluting all veterans will take place at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 11 in front of the administration building on the IHCC Main Campus.
Bob Morrissey, Assistant to the President, Governmental Affairs and Community Relations, will be the keynote speaker for the ceremony. Morrissey served in the United States Air Force from 1958-64.
Maurice Carter, an IHCC Arts and Sciences student and a member of the Iowa National Guard, will present the colors to the Ottumwa High School JROTC Honor Guard. The Ottumwa chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Honor Guard will provide a gun salute.
According to Teresa McNitt, Veterans Affairs Director at Indian Hills, the college has served veterans for over 40 years. McNitt says 125 veterans receiving benefits are enrolled at IHCC for the fall term.
McNitt emphasizes that the public is invited to attend the flag ceremony next week and view the “Wall of Honor” at the college. Any questions can be directed to McNitt at (641) 683-5328.
