KIRKSVILLE, MO -- Some traffic changes may be coming to a road near you. Kirksville’s Department of Public Works presented a proposal to eliminate the four lanes on Jefferson Street between High and Baltimore Streets.
Director John Buckwalter told members of the Airport and Transportation Commission that he’d like to create two lanes of traffic and a center turning lane.
Buckwalter says that he think this will significantly improve the flow of traffic in the area.
“That will eliminate a lot of the conflicts we see with people driving on Jefferson (street) attempting to make a right-hand turn from the inner lane and not clearing the traffic that’s coming on the outer lane. People don’t like to drive on that outer lane anyway, especially when it’s wet.”
Buckwalter says that the outer lanes will become a four foot bike lanes.
Funding for the project would be helped out by a grant form the Missouri Foundation for Health.
If council approves, Buckwalter anticipates the project to be complete in spring or summer of next year.
