DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- The Iowa Board of Pharmacy has rebuffed a pro-marijuana activist's request to make medical marijuana legal.
The Des Moines Register says the board on Tuesday repeated its position that the Legislature take the lead in any such discussions.
Carl Olsen of Des Moines asked the board to set rules allowing Iowans to use marijuana to alleviate health problems.
In February, the board called for lawmakers to change the classification of marijuana to a Schedule II drug. Such drugs have the potential for abuse but also have accepted medical uses.
Board Chairman Vernon Benjamin told Iowa Public Radio on Tuesday that the board will file legislation to make the change, but he doubts that lawmakers will address it.
Legislative leaders have said they're not interested in debating the issue.
