KIRKSVILLE, MO -- A project to improve storm drainage in Kirksville will receive some extra funding. During Monday night’s City Council meeting, members unanimously approved a change order of almost $30,000 dollars for Concrete Pavement Repair, as well as Curb, Gutter and Storm Drainage Work.
According to Public Works Director John Buckwalter this extra money will cover some expenses that they’ve run into during the construction period.
“There are some areas where you can’t see what you have until you’ve actually done the excavation. For instance, on the storm drainage where there are systems that have been in for decades that weren’t adequately mapped," explained Buckwalter. "The other…there are driveways that quite frankly we missed the driveway. Didn’t realize that was a driveway and needed to be included and paved as we came through the street. And the widening…when we put the curb in and got the straight lines aligned, we realized we should have included more widening. That was simply an error in planning.”
The funding for this will come from the transportation sales tax.
There’s also a second part of the change order that involves the water-main on LaHarpe Street. A water line that is almost 900 feet was installed and now the road needs to be paved. Buckwalter says that this work is included with the change order because the contractor is better equipped than the public works department. Funding for this will come from the utility fund.
