DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Warm, dry weather has allowed Iowa farmers to harvest almost all of the state's soybean crop and two-thirds of its corn crop.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that's compared with a year ago when only 9 percent of the corn crop had been harvested. The Des Moines Register reports Tuesday that the USDA says 66 percent of the crop is in bins and elevators. The USDA also says 69 percent of the corn crop is rated good to excellent.
A USDA report says that Iowa is "well ahead of normal" in harvesting. The report says that mean there should be time for fall tillage, fertilizing and installing tile. However the USDA says the downside to the warm conditions has been the number of field and equipment fires.
