OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Bubba is serving up some good old fashioned barbecue in Ottumwa.

Bubba-Q’s, originally a catering service, but now a new restaurant in downtown Ottumwa, opened its doors Thursday, Oct. 14.

“We just did an unannounced opening yesterday, Thursday, and the wife put something on her facebook, that was it, and we just kind-of wanted to go into it slow before we did any announcing, but it was good and busy yesterday and it's good and busy today.”

Serving up the typical beef briscuit, pit-cooked ham and turkey breast, and baby-back ribs, you can also try something different… like barbecue nachos. If your mouth isn’t already watering, Bubba has more in store for the restaurant.

“We're also going to put in cheesy potatoes, things like that going in, and then we'll have coleslaw, cottage cheese, potato salad, pasta salad and then we got a variety of desserts,” said Bubba Knapp, owner. “We got scratch-made pies, cookies, cakes, you know, nothing bought, everything made from scratch, so it takes a little more [work], but they taste better.”

Bubba explains the atmosphere at his new place.

“It's just a typical barbecue joint, nothing fancy in there. We wanted to keep things where people were comfortable coming in no matter how they [were] dressed and [those are] just the kind of places that [are] fun to go eat at, so that's what we went for.”

Why should you go to Bubba’s?

“It’s just good food, good food,” said Bubba. “Good food speaks for itself. We don’t need anything fancy with it and barbecue’s something that will touch people from business suits to bib-overalls, so it’s just good food.”

Bubba-Q’s is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
