KIRKSVILLE, MO -- A communication issue was a big topic up for discussion Monday at the Kirksville City Council Study Session.
Kirksville's emergency radios will have to be replaced by 2013 to comply with federal regulations.
Some of the radios used by the Kirksville police and fire departments have been replaced through grants. But the dilemma facing the city is replacing the e-911 base stations that communicate with the city's emergency responders.
“They're old enough that we're not even sure how old they are. What we're fairly confident in is that the current base stations that we use are at least 24 years old and that was an old technology that doesn't exist anymore. If it would break, we're not even sure we could get parts,” said Police Chief Jim Hughes.
Those replacements come with a price tag estimated at $271,000. At this point, the city is not sure where the funding will come from.
