OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Are you interested in doing some fall landscaping? How about lowering your energy bill?
Alliant Energy’s ReLeaf program offers both those options at minimal cost to you.
Alliant customers can purchase trees for $25 from 4 p.m to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Pioneer Ridge Nature Center.
They say trees can be good for the environment in more ways than one.
“Operation ReLeaf offers our customers an energy efficient way to actually lower their costs by planting trees in a area where it will block the sunshine so it’s an energy efficient opportunity for our customers,” said Laurie Appleget, Strategic Account Manager for Alliant Energy.
Appleget said this is a simple easy way to lower summertime bills.
“Well by blocking the sunshine and allowing more shade onto the residential properties. We do this program in partnership with the DNR and several County Conservation Boards. So it is a cooperative effort that we have this program for our customers.”
Though there is a two tree per household limit, it is recommended that you per-order your trees.
A total of 250 trees of six varieties will be sold in Ottumwa. The trees typically retail for $65 or more. They will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Additional 2010 Operation ReLeaf events will be held in the following counties: Washington County on September 30, Linn County on October 2, Des Moines County on October 7, Lucas County on October 9, Fayette County on October 16 and Worth County on October 23. Tree species offered will vary at each event and include shade trees, ornamentals and evergreens.
Order forms are available here, or by calling the Iowa DNR at 515-281-6749. You can also go to the Wapello County Conservation Board.
