KIRKSVILLE, MO -- A Boy Scout from Kirksville is one step closer to becoming an Eagle Scout.  Brandon Vorkink, 17, spent the weekend constructing a playground at the new Early Childhood Center in Kirksville.  Vorkink, along with other members of Troop 406, built two large play houses as well as a sandbox.

“This idea, my dad works for the school so he heard about it and recommended it to me” said Vorkink.  “I came over and I like building things and I like fixing things up so, kinda something I like to do.”

Completing an Eagle Project is usually the last step in a Boy Scouts journey after completing all 21 merit badges (12 required and 11 elective) and holding leadership positions within the troop.  A boy scout starts out as a “scout” rank.  Then earns “tenderfoot” followed by “second class”, “first class”, “star” and then “life” rank.  Each scouter strives to obtain the final rank, Eagle Scout.  However, only four-percent of all scouts finish the journey successfully.

Vorkink said Kirksville School Board helped by donating all the supplies for the project.

The Boy Scouts of America were founded on February 8, 1910, by William Boyce and continue strong today.
