OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Hand over the drugs!

That’s what residents of Southeast Iowa will be doing Sept. 25, during the National Take Back Initiative.

The event is sponsored by the Ottumwa  Substance Abuse Task Force, SIEDA, 8th Judicial District Drug Court, Family Treatment Court, First Resources, and Quincy Place Mall. It's a collaborative effort between state, federal and local law enforcement to prevent prescription drug abuse.

Officers will provide a safe disposal for area residents to surrender their expired, unwanted or unused prescription drugs, which will be destroyed.

The collection site will be located at Center Court at the Quincy Place Mall in Ottumwa, between 10 – two p.m.

They will be accepting tablets, capsules, and all other solid dosage forms of medication, but will not be accepting intravenous solutions, injectibles and syringes.

For those who are disabled and unable to leave their residence, you may call the Ottumwa Police Department, at (641) 683-0661, Saturday morning to make arrangements with an officer for pick-up.
