PALMYRA, MO. (AP) -- A former northeast Missouri sheriff's deputy will not face another trial in the shooting of man at his home.
Marion County Prosecuting Attorney Tom Redington dropped charges Monday against 54-year-old Larry Uhlmeyer of Taylor. He had been charged with first-degree assault and three counts of second-degree assault in the Sept. 30, 2007, shooting of James Rudd.
The shooting left Rudd paralyzed from the neck down.
Uhlmeyer's trial was to have begun Thursday. He had claimed that he shot Rudd in self-defense during a confrontation at Uhlmeyer's home. His first trial in March ended in a mistrial.
The Hannibal Courier-Post reports that Redington said he decided to drop the charges because of earlier testimony from Dr. Arden Reynolds of Quincy, who said Rudd's statements would be unreliable.
