CENTERVILLE, IOWA -- Mercy Medical Center in Centerville had something special to celebrate Friday, Sept. 10.

Friday marked their 100th anniversary.

A centennial celebration was hosted in honor of the many years of service. It started with a Mass, and then continued with a lunch-in for out of town guests, a rededication ceremony and tours of the hospital, which was decorated with historical displays.

“We want to recognize our community for everything they've done for this hospital,” said Ann Young, Mercy’s Vice President of Community and Staff Relations. “They've partnered with the Sisters of Mercy for 100 years, through two brand new buildings, to build new buildings and a major addition, and without that support, this hospital would not be here, so we want to recognize and celebrate with our community.”

Established in 1910 by the Sisters of Mercy, the non-profit Catholic hospital employs 270 staff and operates around the core values of reverence, integrity, compassion and excellence.

“Catholicism has been an important part of Mercy. As a Catholic hospital, we believe that that is what our mission is, and it's ecumenical and we've been supported by all faiths and welcome all faiths, and we really believe that's the underlying reason, and we continue to be here today and be successful because of that faith and that mission.”

Young summarized the hospital's advances over the past 100 years, and plans for the next 100 years.

“We’ve just continued to grow and develop with advanced technologies and we had 150,000 patient visits last year, and we're a very busy, little rural hospital that's very well supported by the community, and we just continue to grow and meet the needs of our community.”

Young said the event had a great turnout, with the Bishop of Davenport in attendance, as well as former employees and retirees, business leaders, the board of directors, and volunteers and staff.
