COLUMBIA, MO. (AP) -- The Planned Parenthood clinic in Columbia has temporarily stopped offering abortions because of difficulty scheduling doctors.
Peter Brownlie, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri, says he hopes the clinic can resume offering surgical and pharmaceutical abortions by the end of the month.
Brownlie said that a law that took effect Aug. 28 that places more requirements on doctors and women seeking abortions did not cause the scheduling difficulties.
The Columbia Tribune reports that abortion opponents say they are skeptical about that explanation. Columbia anti-abortion activist Kathy Forck says she believes doctors are unwilling to perform surgical abortions at the clinic.
The Columbia clinic will continue to offer contraceptive services, wellness exams and other services.
