KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Monday was the last day for many Heartland residents to take a final dip in local pools or lakes.  At Thousand Hills State Park business was slow on this Labor Day.

Typically the beach is busiest the weekends of Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day.  Due to high E. Coli levels, the beach was closed July 4th weekend and one other weekend during the summer.

Throughout the summer, how has business been at the beach?

“It’s pretty much off and on.  We’ve had a couple e-coli weeks where we had to close for a week or so but on the weekends it’s been pretty solid busy.  But Labor Day weekends been kind of a flop,” said Lifeguard Ali Barrett.

Barrett says that could be due to the cool weather leading up to the holiday weekend.  She says not only is the air temperature cool but the water is even cooler making it uncomfortable for swimmers.

Overall the weather this summer made for better business at the beach than last year.
