OTTUMWA, IOWA -- U.S. Senator Charles Grassley visited Ottumwa Wednesday and reaching out to meet with some who may not be able to come see him otherwise.
Senator Grassley, (R) Iowa, visited with residents of Pennsylvania Place, touring their facility and shaking hands along the way.
He then held an open forum to answer any questions the residents might have.
One resident asked about social security. Senator Grassley said it may take more than a bipartisan effort to reform Social Security.
“There is some thought the that president's appointment to the deficit reduction commission that reports on December 1st may make some recommendations on social security and on the recommendations, I should reserve judgment on them until the recommendations are made if they make any.”
Another topic one resident brought up was term limits. Joking on how long she has been in office she said she couldn’t remember anyone prior to him.
Grassley voted for term limits in the 90’s and his opinion hasn’t changed.
“I would be inclined to vote for them again. I think the ideal term limits would be two 6-year terms for a Senator and six 2-year terms for House members, or as some people have been suggesting maybe House members ought to have four year terms so then you would have three 4-year terms.”
Senator Grassley faces Democrat Roxanne Conlin in this November’s election.
