(OTTUMWA, Iowa) - Below is the Iowa Democratic Party's response to comments made this week by Republican State Senate Candidate Sandra Greiner on the subject of President Obama's religion.

The response was emailed to KTVO by party spokesman, Sam Roecker.

"President Obama has made it incredibly clear that he is a Christian. It's unfortunate that Republicans like Sandy Greiner and Kim Lehman have refused to talk about the real issues facing Iowans and instead chosen to use these false attacks to score political points.

"These attacks have no place in a state like Iowa that has always valued open and honest debate, but they are unfortunately taking over their side of the aisle. I think most Iowans are tired of seeing members of the Iowa Republican Party in the national spotlight for this type of incendiary and false attack."

On Wednesday, Greiner told KTVO the following:

“I am saying I don’t know. He said he is. He says he is a Christian. If he says he is a Christian I will take his word for it until somebody proves to me otherwise. I don’t have time to do the research right now,” Greiner said.

“Hey, It is a free country. We can think whatever we want to think,” Greiner said. “I am not sure that that is a paramount issue that Iowans have to address right now. We are in a situation where we need to get jobs in this state, we have a budget crisis and we have all kinds of other things that we could have an impact on.”

Greiner went on to say that some people feel like they have done research and have their opinions. And as Americans, people can believe what they want.
