KIRKSVILLE, MO -- As summer time comes to an end, college students are starting to prepare for class. Cars, trucks, and even a few U-Hauls lined the streets in Kirksville on Saturday on the campus of Truman State University. That’s right; it was move-in day for hundreds of new freshman students.
While moving into a dormitory for the first time can be a new and hectic experience, many of upperclassmen were there to help.
"I think it’s a great help actually” said Caroline Paillou. “When I was a freshman, I got here so early in the morning that none of the workers were here yet so I really wish I would have had them here to help. We just want to come help out the families because we know it’s pretty stressful. Sometimes we give them directions and the parents are always nervous I think, so it helps for them to talk to an upperclassman and know that we’ve been through it and we’re still alive so everything’s fine.”
Truman is expecting close to a six-percent increase in new student enrollment this year. The new freshmen come from 24 states and 20 countries. Slightly more than 80-percent of the students are Missouri residents, with students from Illinois, Iowa, and Kansas comprising the largest number of out-of-state students.
Earlier this week, Truman was once again announced number one.
"Here at Truman we’re really excited because just this week it was announced for the 14th year in a row that we’re the number one school here in the Midwest by U.S. News and Report rankings” said Truman State University President Troy Paino. “We’re really excited about the incoming class. We have over 1,400 students, we’re up about six percent in our incoming students, and the quality of our incoming class couldn’t be better."
Classes for Truman State University start on Thursday, August 26.
