KIRKSVILLE, MO -- Saturday was a special day for some area medical students. A.T. Still University – Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine held their 14th Annual White Coat Ceremony. The event welcomes new med students to the university by offering them with their first white physician coat.
Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine Dean Philip Slocum said a students coat will grow with experience.
“What you will notice is that there are different lengths to the coat you wear” said Slocum. “As students you are learning to become professionals, you are learning to become physicians and as such you are assigned a coat with the shortest length.”
Slocum said once the students graduate and move on to their residencies, they will receive a different coat which is three-quarters of an inch longer. Once they become doctors, their coats will grow even longer.
The Class of 2014 includes 172 students from 30 states, as well as India and Pakistan. 32 of the incoming students are from Missouri; 11 students recently graduated from Truman State University.
