The flood waters did not reach the downtown stores or landmarks.
BENTONSPORT, IOWA -- The Des Moines River is bank full, and many fields throughout the Heartland remain saturated.
But the water has receded in other areas, such as Bentonsport in Van Buren County.
As the river levels rose over the last two weeks, some in Bentonsport were sandbagging around the historic landmarks in town, but the water never reached those buildings.
KTVO spoke with Bill Printy...he and his wife are the proprietors of Iron & Lace, one of the shops in Bentonsport along the Des Moines River.
"Saylorville Reservoir and Red Rock Reservoir are pretty full. And obviously right now the river is pretty full...the river is bank full right now. So there isn't much place for any excess water to go. But the river is slowly dropping, very slowly," Printy said.
He added that the river crested at a lower number than expected. Some people were predicting over 30 feet.
"It crested at 27.5 feet. So here in Bentonsport, we really didn't have any of the buildings or the homes flooded. We just had the riverside park here, there's a home upstream here just a little ways. And it got close, but it didn't get in," Printy said.
And regarding the recent rainfall numbers in Bentonsport...
"It used to rain a quarter or a half an inch. Now it's 3 or 4 inches every time in rains. So I don't know really what to expect. We're just looking at it a day at a time," Printy said.
He also stated that river levels in Bentonsport were equivalent to those levels from 2008, but not as severe what residents dealt with in 1993.
