WASHINGTON – Chuck Grassley today said that the U.S. Department of Education has awarded 27 competitive grants totaling $7,412,818 to Iowa colleges through the Student Support Services Program.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, the purpose of the Student Support Services Program is to provide academic and other support services to low-income, first generation or disabled college students to increase student retention and graduation rates, facilitate their transfer from two-year to four-year colleges, and foster an institutional climate supportive of the success of low-income and first generation college students and individuals with disabilities

“This program is intended to increase educational success among nontraditional students, which can greatly increase their earning ability and independence,” Grassley said.

The U.S. Department of Education will distribute the funds as shown below, listed alphabetically by institution.

• Briar Cliff University in Sioux City will receive $289,124.
• Central College in Pella will receive $293,864.
• Coe College in Cedar Rapids will receive $293,864.
• Des Moines Area Community College will receive $339,596.
• Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls will receive $60,000.
• Graceland University in Lamoni will receive $301,692.
• Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo will receive $255,505.
• Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa will receive $293,458.
• Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge will receive $255,504.
• Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville will receive $290,495.
• Iowa State University in Ames will receive $342,500.
• Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs will receive $293,138.
• Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids will receive $293,864.
• Luther College in Decorah will receive $293,864.
• Marshalltown Community College will receive $150,000.
• North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City will receive $301,692.
• Northeast Iowa Community College in Peosta will receive $238,496.
• Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon will receive $249,374.
• Scott Community College in Davenport will receive $288,353.
• Simpson College in Indianola will receive $238,496.
• Southeastern Community College in West Burlington will receive $367,034.
• Southwestern Community College in Creston will receive $270,957.
• University of Dubuque will receive $220,000.
• University of Iowa in Iowa City will receive $358,523.
• University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls will receive $322,928.
• Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City will receive two grants totaling $510,497.
