KIRKSVILLE, MO -- Small nonprofit organizations in Missouri and Iowa are at risk of losing their tax-exemption status.  According to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), 35 small organizations in Kirksville and 34 in Ottumwa failed to file their requested returns for 2007, 2008, and 2009.  Organizations that do not satisfy annual filing requirements for three consecutive years automatically lose their tax-exempt status.

Our Fact Finder team discovered the IRS is offering a one-time relief program to any and all of these organizations.

Two types of relief are available for small exempt organizations.  A filing extension for the smallest organizations require to file Form 990-N, Electronic Notice, and a voluntary compliance program for small organizations eligible to file Form 990-EZ, Short Form Return of Organization Exempt From income Tax.

If the organizations on the list return their form by October 15, 2010, they will not lose their tax exempt status.  However, if any of the known organizations fail to comply, they will have to reapply with the IRS to regain their tax-exempt status.  In the meantime, any income received between the revocation date and renewed exemption may be taxable.

Missouri has a total of 7,337 organizations and Iowa has a total of 3,695 organizations that have not filed in the last three consecutive years.
