KIRKSVILLE, MO --

Local kids are learning how to be master gardeners.

The Adair County Extension Center put on the 11th annual Garden 'N' Grow program this summer for kids ages eight to 14.

Each child plants, waters, and harvests their own themed garden.

“We also talk about healthy eating and we cook various dishes with the produce and we think it's important that the children know how to use the produce because so many people out here are not sure how to cook squash or how to cook eggplant,” said Horticulture Specialist Jennifer Schutter.

Some of the gardeners exhibited vegetables in the NEMO Fair, several of which were award winning.

Kids get to take some vegetables home, and they also donate produce to the Salvation Army Food Pantry.
