KIRKSVILLE, MO --

A local government agency is working to feed the community.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development is holding a nation wide food drive this summer. So far the local offices have raised about 430 pounds of food for the Kirksville Food Pantry.

“We have been taking monetary donations, as well as people just bringing food and if they give us a monetary donation we are going to the local stores here in Kirksville and we are purchasing the food to bring to the food pantry and keeping it local,” said Glenda Shafer, Co-Director.

The food drive will continue through the month of August. If you’re interested in donating non-perishable food items, you can drop them by the USDA Rural Development office at 2410 S. Franklin Street. There will also be food drives held at Wal-Mart on August 7, and one at Hy-Vee at the end of August.
