JEFFERSON CITY, MO. (AP) -- State election officials expect about one-quarter of Missouri's eligible voters to cast ballots during Tuesday's primary election.
The projected 24 percent turnout would mean more than 1 million ballots are cast in the statewide primary. Missourians are voting in two statewide races and for a ballot measure that seeks to reject part of the federal health care overhaul. Republican Roy Blunt and Democrat Robin Carnahan are the front-runners in the top race to replace retiring GOP Sen. Kit Bond.
According to estimates released Tuesday by the secretary of state's office, the highest anticipated turnout is 85 percent in Lafayette County. Kansas City is expected to have the lowest at 10 percent.
During the August 2008 primary, 18 percent of those registered voted.
