BETHEL, MO. -- A shooting suspect was discovered dead in the woods outside of Bethel Sunday afternoon.
41-year-old Patrick McIntire of Waverly, Illinois allegedly shot his former girlfriend Friday morning just north of Bethel.
Authorities were looking for McIntire all weekend until his body was discovered in a wooded area off of County Road 179.
According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department McIntire was killed by a self inflicted gun shot wound.
Melvin Brumbaugh lives near Bethel and was looking for arrowheads when he stumbled upon McIntire's body lying next to the Ford Explorer the suspect was driving.
“I couldn't tell whether he was dead or alive, the vehicle was here and then I get on up here and there this person lay. I hollered and.. no response, and I come on up here and I see it was a dead man,” said Melvin Brumbaugh.
Brumbaugh says he immediately notified the authorities.
The body was in an isolated area nearly a half mile off the gravel road and Brumbaugh says it may not have been discovered until hunting season in October.
The female victim has been released from Samaritan Hospital in Macon.
